Welcome to Philly!

Miracle Matt

Hi family and friends and missionaries and returned missionaries! Get
ready for a long email!

On Saturday it was super busy and the parking lot underneath the
temple was full so we had to park at in the Broad and Noble parking
lot and walk to the temple. It's not that far. After our shift though
the parking lot was still full and they don't want us walking alone in
philly at night so the Assistants came and walked a group of sisters
to the other parking lot. Awkward and funny. We were in the reception
area that day and it was packed all day. We saw Philly Jesus. He is a
guy who dresses up and looks like Jesus and he walks around Philly all
the time I guess. He was taking pictures with the christus and the
people in the room were crowding around taking pictures with their
phones. He started taking selfies too. It was so funny. One of the
sister training leaders took a picture with him hahaha. 😂
Also I saw some less actives from Newark 3rd!! The Olivers and Pat and
Clayton! It was so awesome. There was a senior couple missionary in
the reception area who's last name I recognized and turns out, their
nephew served in my home ward at one point! Isn't that crazy!
Mostly in the reception area I stood by the table with the comment
cards and said "we would love to hear your comments on one of these
comment cards!" There was a bunch of cards filled out! We've gotten
some referrals but we have like no time to contact them. Sister Van
Arsdale and Sister Kelsey got one and the number was for Pizza Hut 😂
we have been trying to contact this one guy but he's never home. This
other lady wanted a Book of Mormon. We stopped by and we met a lady
who lives with her. The referral is a retired nun. She was sleeping
because they get up at 5 everyday.

Sunday we went to church. In relief society we talked about having a
happy successful marriage. Awkward thing to talk about when you are a
missionary and you can't even think about dating! 😂😂 After church we
stopped by some less actives and investigators and NOBODY WAS HOME. We
thought we had a new investigator. Turns out she isn't interested in
changing her beliefs and she has a church she goes to. Okay then.

Monday we work from 12-5:30. After our shift, at 7, we had another
sister temple training. They talked about flexibility, diligence,
positivity. They also talked more about the dress and grooming
guidelines. The sister training leaders also mentioned that we now
have another part added to our talking points for the video room!
After the meeting Sister Nielson asked president if she could go to
Matt's baptism on the 4th and he said yes! Here is the story about
Miracle Matt! Her and Sister Ashcraft met him on July 24th, the day
the missionaries were able to bring their investigators to the temple.
They were outside passing out open house cards, trying to get people
to come. Matt was on his bike and he stopped and looked at the temple.
They asked if he wanted to come inside. He said he needed to change
because his tattoos were showing and he didn't feel comfortable. They
told him it's okay. He started riding his bike to his house to change
but instead he decided it was going to take to long and once he was
home he wouldn't want to come back so he turned around and came back
and took a tour with Sister Ashcraft and Sister Nielson. There was a
lady in their group that had tattoos showing so he felt more
comfortable with his tattoos showing. He said to them that he would
like to be baptized!! The missionaries who were over the ysa happened
to be there that night and they were on the roof top so they took him
up to the roof top and he started talking to this elder who is like
6'10" and played basketball for byu. Matt likes to play basketball as
well so the elder invited him to play basketball with him and Matt
said "I'm afraid you will dunk on me" and Sister Nielson said "don't
worry Matt the only time we will dunk on you is when we dunk you in
the baptismal font" 😂 he has been going to the ysa ward every Sunday
and has been inviting some of his friends. He is always at the temple.
After we got permission to go, the elders told him that Sister Nielson
and Sister Ashcraft were coming to his baptism and he believed Sister
Ashcraft was going but not Sister Nielson so on Wednesday he came to
the temple and found us and asked her if it was true hahaha. We asked
him what time and he said "you tell me what time you can make it and
we will plan for that time" we were like "no, you tell us what time
you would like us to come" haha. He looked at me and said " you are
coming too then right? you would have to. I bet you are excited" and I
said "yes I am so excited!" Sister Nielson is just in heaven right
now!
We also have Parker and Benson Li who are ages 8 and 9 getting
baptized this Sunday!
There are 6 people scheduled to be baptized on Sunday ... But I think
the Spanish elders in our ward moved them to next Sunday. That would
be crazy!!

Tuesday we had a specialized zone training in Broomall. It was super
good. They talked about online proselyting and new planning
guidelines. I decided I wasn't going to add any family and friends
because it is too much of a distraction! I believe you can all be able
to see my posts still though! President Randall said we are welcome to
attend all three sessions of the temple dedication on September 18th!
😊 he interviewed us all individually and gave us a temple dedication
recommend. I also got my wawa card I earned a couple of transfers ago
for having my apartment clean! I got to bare a one sentence testimony
on the temple and I said "because of the temple I know that families
can be together forever and that is what brought my mom and sister in
law to the gospel" after the meeting we ate our lunch in the kitchen
and headed to the temple for our shift!

On Wednesday we had to park at broad and noble because it was pretty
busy that day. The assistants came that night (they were on exchanges
so it was Elder Weisler and another elder) three sets of sisters and
the elders walked over to the broad and noble parking lot. They needed
sisters to drive cars to the other parking lot. At first I told them
that I didn't want to drive in the dark in Philly by myself. Sister
Ashcraft couldn't drive, so Sister Nielson offered for me to drive
with Sister Ashcraft and I said okay, I should be able to do that. We
were supposed to follow Sister Nielson but there was a time where she
turned and we went straight. Sister Ashcraft told me that she was in
the wrong lane and I needed to go straight. We got lost a couple
times. The elders were calling us. We made it to the temple parking
lot and everyone's faces were hilarious. Elder Weisler was kinda
freaking out. I tried to park and almost hit a car. I parked and got
out and Elder Weisler said "I am so glad you are alive!" I said "me
too, thanks" 😂 probably the most awkwardest and embarrassing moment
in my life. I said to Elder Weisler "this is why I am not the
designated driver" and he had a blank stare on his face. We were
leaving and he shook my hand and said "glad you are alive" or
something like that. It was funny. Tiwi didn't yell at me. I didn't
die. Only got honked at a couple times. Just taking a tour around
philly. No big deal. It would have been way worse if I was by myself.
Heavenly Father is watching out for his missionaries! The assistants
are probably never going to let me drive again 😂 I felt so bad for
Sister Ashcraft because in the beginning of her mission she got in an
accident so she gets shooken up sometimes so she was probably really
nervous.

Thursday the morning shift had to go to the training in Broomall and
so they asked us if we could work the morning shift and we said yes.
So we went from working the evening shift on Wednesday to working
bright and early on Thursday. We had to wake up at 5:15😑 I was so
tired.
The morning was a little slow at first but then it kicked up. We did a
Spanish tour and we just sat down while the usher introduced the video
haha. I love listening to people speak Spanish. Their was only two
people in the room haha. We had a lesson with Ryan that night. It was
well. We talked about the plan of salvation and patriarchal blessings.
We went to Lorenzo and sons or whatever it's called and got a huge
pizza slice. I was craving pizza allll week!!

Every transfer we get a scripture we recite every morning with our
purpose before comp study. This transfer it is 3 Nephi 5:13
"Behold I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the son of God. I have been
called of him to declare his word among his people. That they might
have everlasting life." Powerful huh! I love it.
I love you all so much!!

That was one of those days hahaha

Aladdin

Hello! Happy Friday everyone!

This week felt like the longest week of my life.

So, we have been at the temple everyday from 2:30-8ish, except for Sunday's.

There is this family in our ward who's dad/husband is not a member.
The family took a trip to Utah and he stayed here and he was secretly
taking the lessons from the Spanish elders! What?! When his family
came back, they were eating dinner one night and the dad said casually
that he was going to get baptized! His family didn't believe him at
first! The wife said it took them 20 years! He got baptized and
confirmed on Saturday and me and sister Nielson missed it! The other
sisters went and said the baptism was 2 and a half hours or longer! I
think they left before it ended! Crazy! And like the whole ward came!
There was another baptism of an 8 year old boy on Sunday and me and
Sister Nielson was able to stay for that. It was really good.
There was also a girls farewell who is going to Germany on her mission!
We ate dinner at the wrights home. One of their daughters is also
going on a mission soon and I think her farewell is this Sunday.

One day at the temple, a couple of teenage boys came into our room and
they were from all over and were living in Virginia doing door to door
sales. They asked where we were from and I said Nevada and this one
boy asked what part and I said Henderson and he said he used to live
there during his middle school years and I asked what middle school he
went to and he said Mannion and I said "no way! So did I!" He then
asked how old I was and I said 20 and he is 19 so we were there at the
same time and didn't even know each other! He also lived near me!
HAHA😂
There was also this husband and wife who lives in Las Vegas and flew
down to the open house. They took a picture of me and sent it to my
mom and it's now on Facebook! haha.
Btw, I deactivated my Facebook because I didn't want all of my friends
on there (sorry haha!)

We did our first Spanish video group! The usher did the intro for us
and we watched the video in Spanish and it was so cool. Afterwards we
watched the American Sign Language one and it's the coolest thing
ever!!! I want to learn sign language haha!

One time I asked Sister Nielson if we could go to the bathroom and she
ignored me so I said it again and she said "oh I thought you said
Aladdin!" I literally died laughing. Just kidding. I didn't die. But
it was hilarious 😂😂
Now when ever I need to use the restroom I say I need to Aladdin 😂

Also, we ran out of food in our apartment so one day for dinner we had
popcorn, granola bars, and mangoes ... And yesterday we got a wawa
sandwich haha. I'm glad it's our pday today!
I am currently sitting on the couch that is in the living room with
pants on! Greatest thing ever.
Also, I tried making my first runny yoke egg the other day. It didn't
turn out runny... I tried it again this morning twice and the first
one came out runny but the second one didn't. :(

Love you all!!

 "Welcome to the Philadelphia Pennsylvania temple open house"

Hi! Surprise!

SO, right now my pday is today. I work at the temple everyday except
for Friday's and Sunday's. BUT that might change. They change our
schedule all the time 😂

Tuesday we had transfers. We had a transfer meeting in the parking
garage underneath the temple 😂 I am now with Sister Nielson. The new
goldens didn't get here until Wednesday so Sister Van Arsdale went
with Sister Crystal (she came out with me and is training too) to her
area. Sister Nielson and I worked at the temple. We were in the
reception area. We worked from 2-9:30pm. So tiring. There was members
from Newark 3rd there in charge of the food. It is always fun to see
people from past areas. We had a little break when no one was in the
reception room and there was a lady who was playing the piano so the
sisters that were in the room went over to the piano and we all sang
with her. It was really pretty.

Wednesday. The goldens didn't get here until like 1. Sister Kelsey is
from Twin Falls, Idaho. Super Cute. The public tours started! There
were protestors at the front of the temple with a megaphone and signs.
They were talking negative about Mormons and talking about the bible
and Jesus Christ. It was pretty bad. So the ushers wanted some sister
missionaries out there to bring the spirit. So they told sister
Nielson and I and a couple more sisters to stand out there. We
couldn't talk to them and they told us earlier that we aren't allowed
to pass out cards to people anymore so we literally just stood there
in the heat. I tried to just block out everything they were saying.
Apparently they got paid to do that.. Towards the end of the night we
were able to go into the reception room and I got asked a bunch of
questions. There was a ton more people for the public tours than the
VIP tours. It was crazy. At night the assistants and president came to
the temple and grabbed our cars from the broad and noble parking lot
and took them over to the parking garage underneath the temple. We got
a new AP. His name is Elder Oldroyd and he is from Arizona.

Thursday, Sister Nielson and I working in the video room. We did about
6 tours. It was fun. This is what we have to say- "welcome to the
Philadelphia Pennsylvania temple open house. We will begin by showing
a 10 minute video that explains what temples are and why they are
special. After the video, you will be guided to the temple to begin
your tour. Before entering the temple, covers will be placed over your
shoes to limit dirt and wear on the carpets and floors. Accommodations
for those in wheelchairs and others who are unable to use stairs are
available at the entrance to the temple. Following the tour, you are
invited to visit a reception area that features displays about Jesus
Christ, families, and temples. If there is not time for questions
during the tour, most can be answered by hosts in the reception area.
You may also share your experience or request additional information
my completing one of these comment cards. Taking photographs is not
permitted inside the temple. Photos are available online at
mormonnewsroom.org. We would ask if you would please silence your cell
phones at this time and for the duration of the tour. Thank you" watch
video. "Please follow your tour guide to the temple and enjoy your
tour!"

One day I saw the new bishop for the Newark 3rd Ward! Bishop Sookhoo!
He is awesome. I also saw the old bishop and his family as well!

I hope you all have a great week!
Love,
Sister Gronning

More Pictures!!

Lots of Pictures!

Transfer calls!! Elder Quentin L. Cook!! Ahhhhhhh

Wow! What a week!!! Continue reading to find out what is happening
with transfersssss 😉

Monday night we took a member out with us and we knocked on this door
thinking it was someone else and it was Helen! We met her in the
parking lot like a week ago! It was crazy. She is Russian and super
sweet. She wanted us to come back and bring her a Russian Book of
Mormon! We got Rita's that night too 😋 I love Rita's, if you haven't
figured that out yet hahaha.

Tuesday we stopped by and visited this super cute old lady who is less
active and her husband is not a member. She was showing us everything
in her house that is from Japan, China, Russia. It was so cool. She
had a ton of stuff and would tell us things twice because she has a
hard time remembering. We went to a nursing home and invited these two
guys to the temple open house and told them the story about how the
temple came to be. It was fun. Then as we were leaving we talked to
this one lady for forever and I don't even remember what she was
talking about haha but we did invite her to the temple open house. We
went to the Brooks to help collect chicken eggs! The chickens were
scaring me hahaha. Pictures are coming! We ate dinner with the
Abernathy's. We had this beans and rice thing and key lime pie. Yummm.
We taught Jesse about faith. We taught Ryan about turning weaknesses
into strengths and read alma 5 with him. Jesse and Ryan are both
recent converts. Ryan has been going through a lot lately.

Wednesday and Thursday we were at the temple. We would go from passing
out temple cards in the front of the temple to the reception room. I
saw elder Quentin l cook and at first I didn't even realize it was
him! Haha! I also saw Vai Sekehema and his wife (no idea how to spell
his name) he played for the Philadelphia Eagles! Andd I also saw and
talked to Chad Lewis who played for the 76ers! (I think) So cool to
see all of these people! One day we saw like 50 nuns taking a tour
with 2 sets of elders! We were like what in the world!! They were from
a different mission. It was insane.
Also we had a zone training on Thursday about using Facebook!!
Surprise!! "We are not a Facebook mission, we are a mission that uses
Facebook" I am really excited. They said we can use our old Facebook
and just clean it up or deactivate it and start over.
I have been seeing people from Newark 3rd and I love it!!

Friday we weekly planned for a little bit. We then went to an area and
walked a tonnn. We were going down this one street and there was this
lady and her daughter who were sitting on the porch and we waved hello
and kept walking. We both felt like we should turn around and talk to
her, so we did. She said this was a sign from God that we turned
around. We showed a temple video with her and her daughter. We invited
her to church and she said she would come and she was excited. She
sadly texted us on Sunday and said she wouldn't be able to come 😶 but
it was a cool experience though, showing that you should talk to
everyone because you never know who Heavenly Father is preparing for
you! We ate dinner at the Dalling's. We had a lesson with the
hedbergs. Less active and part member. We brought this cute young
women with us who is planning on going on a mission. We talked about
the temple with them.

Saturday we were stopping by members houses and showing them a temple
video and asking for referrals. We ate dinner at a Amish market and oh
my goodness. The best place ever. I ate a chicken bacon pretzel log.
It was heaven. We got transfer calls!!! Sister Ashcraft is leaving and
me, sis Van Arsdale, and sis Nielson are staying. Buuut, keep reading
to see what's happening with me, Van Arsdale and Nielson!! 😆

Sunday, BEST DAY EVER. We had fast and testimony meeting and then left
for the temple after the first hour. We had a meeting with Elder
Quentin L Cook!!! And at the beginning we got up and went row by row
in a line and got to shake his hand!!! It was amazing!! He talked to
us about our missions and our purpose. It was awesome. Chad Lewis was
also speaking to our stake but we didn't make it to that. Man, I just
love the temple and this mission!!! We had a lesson with Saddu and Sri
and taught the restoration. Afterwards we found we had a missed call
and a voicemail from President Randall! We called him back and he told
us that me and Sister Van Arsdale will not be companions anymore. He
then told me that I was no longer going to be the newbie. SISTER VAN
ARSDALE IS GETTING A NEW GOLDEN (AKA SHE IS TRAINING) AND I AM
FINISING SISTER NIELSONS TRAINING!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH 😆😬😬 and yes, I
cried when we hung up! I am so excited though. Sister Nielson is
amazing. She is so smart and I am going to learn a lot from her and
she will learn from me.

That is all for this week!
Pday may change!! No idea when though.

Love,
Sister Gronning

Pizza as big as my head!

Grondale!!

So, Gronning and Van Arsdale put together is Grondale .. 😆

Hi everyone!!
This week it rained a ton!! I will never live in the east coast.....

Monday was a pretty normal pday.. Emailed, laundry, clean, washed car,
slept. Haha

Tuesday we tried to stop by some less actives to invite them to the
temple open house but a lot of them weren't home. We had a meeting at
the temple with Elder Richards. We started in the chapel of the stake
center across the street from the temple. He talked about 3 messages -
1. Jesus is our lord and savior. 2. Families. 3. Ordinances of the
temple. We then walked to the temple and did a tour and we stopped in
some rooms and he talked to us some more. He had one of the guys in
the temple presidency I think tell us a story and there was no dry eye
in the room. It was a sad story and the spirit was so strong. Everyone
of us were crying! I just love the temple! It is so beautiful!
I don't remember what else happened on Tuesday.. I am really bad at
writing in my journal lately ... 😬

Wednesday we stopped by a nursing home (I think) and talked to this
cute less active old lady. She told us a bunch of stories from her
family. Her family is famous! I think it was her brother that wrote
the byu fight song! And someone else in her family is a movie star!
She looked at me and said I looked familiar and she thought I'd been
there before and I was like nope, just got here haha. She was super
cute.
We found out that a lot of less actives have moved.. Haha.
We found a new investigator! This lady was outside on her porch. She
started talking about faith and how we need to act. We read Alma 32:37
with her. She told us we could come back and share more! It was pretty
cool.
We ate dinner at the Brooks. Less active and part member family. There
was also one of their non member friends there. They fed us wawa and
Rita's water ice! The less active started talking about deep doctrinal
stuff... We were like alright let's stop this haha.

Thursday we had a lesson with the Gibsons. Showed them how to do
family history. The husband is not a member and he was really
interested! They had a ton of names done already back to the 1500s! It
was crazy. Did some more stop bys and tracting. Not a lot of people
were home. We invited a lot of people to the open house though!
We had a lesson with one of their recent converts, Jesse. It was about
enduring to the end.
I think it was Thursday for dinner we went to a pizza place and their
pizza slices are HUGE. Bigger than my head! I didn't eat the whole
thing but my companion ate hers and a little bit of mine! I'll attach
a photo of it!
We decided to stop by this one potential investigator family and we
had an awesome visit. We invited them to the open house and they were
really interested. They are from a different country and they have a
really cute baby!

Friday we were at the temple from 1-9:30!! It was long but so fun. We
were mostly out front passing out cards and inviting everyone. A lot
of people were really interested and said they would come! I got
sunburned haha. We got rotated a couple times to the reception area. I
saw a lot of people from Newark volunteering :)
Saturday we got poured on and got soaked!! No body was home. We ate
dinner at the Ashbys and they made the best homemade cheesesteak
sandwiches ever!! They have a son that went on a mission and their
other son just left. They love missionaries.

Sunday was church. Our church starts at 1:00. So late! We didn't have
any investigators or rclas at church. The third hour was combined with
the youth and adults and they talked about the history of this area
and the temple. We got eggs and cake from the brooks and had that for
dinner hahaha. We had another lesson with Jesse about tithing.

Oh and I get "where are you from?" 100 times a day. And everyone has
either visited Henderson, or has family in Henderson. It's so funny.

As of right now, starting August 10, my pdays will be on Saturday!!
Love ya all!
